On Birds

Earlier this spring I spent day and night protecting my new strawberry basket from becoming the home of a pair of doves. Day in day out the two tried to nest in my strawberries and day in and day out I would pick their pieces of string and straw out and fluff the leaves on my plant back up. The nutty critters also tried to nest in the ceiling fan above my hot tub and in the luggage rack of my Escape! Gee'z. I got slack when it looked as if they had given up. A couple of weeks ago I discovered that the doves had indeed nested somewhere else but now I had a new guest in my strawberry plant. Robins. Robins don't build flimsy nests either. No, robins construct adobe dwellings! The damage had been done and the nest was large and already taking a toll on my little strawberries so I decided to leave it and use and share it with my daycare children. It's been quite exciting too.

This used to be my strawberry plant that was going to produce luscious strawberries for my breakfast every morning.

The robin's new home.

Sunday, May 17 the first egg hatched early in the morning.

Late in the afternoon the second chick began to break out.

Monday, May 18th

Thursday, May 21. They have sure grown in just three days.

Friday, May 22, feathers are starting to appear on their wings.
